GreenWheaton is an independent, nonpartisan, educational 501(c)(3) organization seeking to promote collaboration between residents, businesses and the community at large while providing environmental education and outreach for all members of the community.
Our founding was inspired by The Wheaton Sector Plan process and influenced by Bethesda Green, which provides a local model for sustainable living in Bethesda, Maryland.
Wendy Howard of WH Consulting has over 25 years of experience working in the Information Technology field. She specializes in streamlining IT systems to conserve natural resources and increase productivity. A native Washingtonian, Ms. Howard is the owner of WH Consulting based in Wheaton, Maryland. For the past 6 years, her practice has focused on bringing “green technology” to Washington metro area customers.

Delegate Al Carr is a state legislator who represents Wheaton and the 18th Legislative District in the Maryland House of Delegates. A member of the Environmental Matters Committee, he has written and successfully championed legislation on energy efficiency, economic development, consumer protection, open government, and transportation. Before joining the General Assembly in 2007, he served three terms as Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem in the Town of Kensington. Al has a degree in Electrical Engineering. He has over twenty years of private sector experience in technical sales, engineering, marketing and government relations.
John DeMarchi serves as the Head of School at Evergreen School in Silver Spring, MD. Evergreen is a Montessori School for children ages 2-9. School values include nurturing the community of Evergreen families, working towards being an environmentally sustainable school and celebrating the rich diversity of its community.
Peter Ensign, LEED AP BD+C, GRP is the Architectural Specialist for the LiveRoof division of Riverbend Nursery. Peter was the Executive Director of DC Greenworks for several years designing and constructing green infrastructure projects, including 40 green roofs. Peter has spoken on behalf of green infrastructure and low impact development practices internationally, including CitiesAlive and Grey to Green, as well as programs sponsored by US EPA and The Smithsonian Institutions. He is an instructor of the Advanced Greenroof Maintenance course through Green Roofs for Healthy Cities. Peter has a background of 20 years in architecture and construction in the DC Metro Region. He received his degree in Architecture and Landscape Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania.
Leah Haygood is founder and President of BuzzWord, Inc., which promotes transparency and accountability through the practice of public sustainability reporting. BuzzWord works with major global companies and non-profit organizations. Ms. Haygood is a founding member of Green Wheaton and of the Sligo Headwaters Civic Association, and has a strong interest in community-level greening.
Kathleen Michels,PhD is a Program Officer at the Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health. A neuroscientist by training, Kathy is also a committed steward of local environmental resources. Kathy is a founding member of Friends of Sligo Creek and GreenWheaton and active in many environmental groups. Kathy is a graduate of the Neurobiology program of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and was a Science and Engineering Fellow of the American Association for Advancement of Science (AAAS). Kathy lives in the Wheaton area with her husband and two sons.
Ed Murtagh, P.E., CEM, is a Registered Professional Engineer and a Certified Energy manager. Since joining USDA in 1989, he has been focusing on significantly reducing environmental impacts and operations and maintenance costs by implementing sustainable practices at the USDA Headquarters Complex. Mr. Murtagh is a GW founding member and current Treasurer who has lived in Wheaton for 20 years. He has extensive experience in sustainable construction and Operations and Maintenance (O&M) building practices, including energy management, indoor air quality, biobased products, environmentally beneficial landscaping, and waste minimization & recycling. Mr. Murtagh is also a member of Friends of Sligo Creek and Neighbors of the Northwest Branch through which he encourages homeowners to manage their onsite stormwater.
Dave Taghipour is the founder of All Eco Design Center, a sustainable, full service design/build company with a showroom in Wheaton, Maryland. His team of talented architects, designers and product specialists assist clients in improving their indoor life experience at home and at work. Dave’s unwavering dedication to client satisfaction and the environment ensure successful results for all of his customers. He is both a talented designer and a visionary whose passion for the planet and good design fuse to provide simple, affordable and beautiful solutions for every lifestyle.
Janet Yu of Hollywood East Café is a longtime resident and business owner in Wheaton MD. Hollywood East Cafe has teamed up with local green businesses to upgrade to eco-friendly carpeting, energy saving LED lighting systems, water saving restrooms, along with Recycled Ceramic tiles and more. Janet is also a member of Les Dames d’Escoffier, an international non-profit whose members are female leaders in food, beverages and hospitality.
